2024-Jul-13 - Escape Velocity
This week's random selection is Escape Velocity, song #2 on disc #3 from my new album It Was All Just a Dream.
Escape Velocity originally appeared on my 2019 album Electric Sky. This new version features new drums and a brand new mix. Both versions of the song feature not one, not two, but three blazing solos from my Canadian axe-slinging brother Rob Waite. Rob & I met at a Vai Academy guitar retreat, and he enthusiastically jumped on board when I was recruiting volunteers to join me on that collaborative album project.
The song gets its name from the astrophysics concept of the speed required in order to escape the gravitational pull of the planet (or other massively large body) the object is trying to depart from. Sounds like a great excuse for some speedy licks, right? This song features Rob and I trading solos at the end of the song, and both of us recorded our parts without hearing each other's solos, but everything came together perfectly!

For my parts, I played a trio of Ibanez Guitars. For rhythm I used my 2014 S5521Q and my 2015 J.Custom RG8571, and for my leads I played my 2017 JEM 77P, and all my parts were played through my Mesa Boogie Mark V:25 using the IIC+ voice.
