This week's randomly selected song Orbit is track #6 from disc #1 of my triple CD album It Was All Just a Dream.
As with pretty much all of the songs that originally appeared on my 1998 unreleased album Kosmos, Orbit has been through a number of iterations and significant modifications over time. In addition to being a part of the1998 Kosmos album, Orbit also found its way onto my debut 2016 release Legacy. And now it has reached its final form on It Was All Just a Dream.
The inspiration behind Orbit was rooted in my interest in non-western music. I imagined an amalgamation of elements from musical traditions from around the world, all fusing together into a single song. I chose the name Orbit because of the use of instrument samples from around the world.
Back when I first wrote Orbit in 1998, my home studio consisted of over 20 different synthesizers, with units from Roland, Korg, E-mu, Kawai, Waldorf, Yamaha, and more. I had access to hundreds, if not thousands, of instrument samples from around the world. The first version of Orbit was heavily layered with percussion, string, and flute samples from all over.
By the time I reworked the song for Legacy, the song retained most of the world music elements, and although I had managed to work some guitar into the song, it was still nearly impossible to perform due to the heavy layering of parts.
With the final It Was All Just a Dream version, I went back to the drawing board, and I dramatically simplified the arrangement of the song, making it a much more guitar-focused tune.
While there are both rhythm and lead guitar parts in the final version of Orbit, all of the parts were played on my Sully 625 US Custom. And all of the parts were played through my trusty Mesa Boogie Mark V:25 amp.
